Punch Brothers Poster at CMS

Updated: Dec 10, 2019

It's nice when something that starts out as a hobby ends up becoming a line on your CV.

In the process of transcribing and analyzing the music of Punch Brothers, I began to find a common thread running through a number of their songs. The common thread was the regular use of modulations to distantly related keys (especially chromatic mediants). While common in music by composers from the Romantic period, modulations to chromatic mediants are unusual in bluegrass, folk, and popular genres. This observation and subsequent investigation led to the creation of the following poster presented at the College Music Society National Conference in San Antonio, TX, October 26-27, 2017. You can view a high res version of the poster here.
